Kosher Food in Canberra

A wide range of products in Canberra shops  have hechshers, and a much wider range, while not having hechshers, are listed in the kosher products guides produced by Australian kashrut authorities (eg. www.ka.org.au).  The most common hechshers are the letters KA in a diamond, a stylised K in a map of Australia in a circle, and the letters OU in a circle.

The availability of specifically kosher food centres around the Jewish Community Centre (Cnr Canberra Av and National Cct, Forrest) and the nearby Coles supermarket (Cnr Flinders Way and Franklin St, Manuka).  This Coles branch has kosher sections similar to kosher sections in many Coles shops in Sydney and Melbourne. The shelves in the kosher sections are marked with kosher signs.

Meat

Individual orders are placed with Coles for meat (fortnightly) and for chicken (monthly).  In addition a small range of fresh meat and a larger range of small goods and cold cuts are available towards the back of aisle 3 at Coles.  Orders can be placed by emailing Coles.0859.manager@coles.com.au by the Friday before the order is due to arrive at Coles or, preferably, by emailing allan@doobov.com by the Thursday before the order is due to arrive at Coles.

Refrigerated Products
Refrigerated products are stocked towards the back of aisle 1 at Coles.  This includes a wide range of cheese (Tempo), as well as yogurts (Tempo), falafel, herring products and a wide selection of dips.  Yumi’s dips are also widely available at other supermarkets.

Frozen Products

Frozen goods are to be found in Coles, two thirds of the way back in aisle 2, and include various types of burekas, falafel, parve ice cream, gefilte and other frozen fish, soups and vegetarian products.

Dry Goods
Dry goods are stocked in Coles, at the back of aisle 1, against the back wall.  They include a wide range of biscuits and crackers, cakes and confectionery, snacks, marinades, dressings and sauces, instant and travel food,  grape juice, olives and pickles, pasta and candles.

Bread and Bakery Products
In its normal bread section Coles stocks Bagel House bagels and Bills bread, both with a hechsher.  Bills bread is a sourdough bread.  Both are available from some other supermarkets in Canberra.  Some Bazaar – Breads of the World flatbreads are kosher (see
www.ka.org.au) and available in various supermarkets.

Bread and other bakery products can also be obtained from Glicks bakery in Melbourne by ordering it through the Jewish Community Centre.  Orders are placed monthly and the bread and other bakery products arrive frozen.

Challah can be obtained from the Jewish Community Centre, which gets it in frozen from Glicks.  It is not necessary to order it.

Wine
A small range of wines are available from the Jewish Community Centre.

Prepared Meals
The Jewish Community Centre stocks frozen cooked meals, currently obtained from Klein’s in Melbourne.

Fish
Many brands of smoked salmon have a hechsher.  In particular Foodbarn, in the Canberra Centre, has a wide range of Yumi’s smoked trout and salmon.  Fried gefilte fish is stocked in the refrigerated products section of Coles Manuka.  Frozen fish fillets and fish sticks are in the kosher frozen goods section in Coles in Manuka.
